Billboard: "Here's To Never Growing Up is just getting started"

Chart success for pop singer's new single sets a promising stage for L.A. Reid-helmed Epic debut.

Before Avril Lavigne performed her new single, "Here's to Never Growing Up," on NBC's "Today" on May 17, the pop singer/songwriter smiled and waved to a special fan in the audience: Antonio "L.A." Reid, chairman/CEO of her new label, Epic Records. Although Reid doesn't drop by every Epic artist's TV performance, he made a special point of being there for the 29-year-old Lavigne, whom he signed to Arista when she was a teenager and whose 2002 debut album, "Let Go" (6.8 million copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan), he executive-produced.
A decade later, Reid is overseeing Lavigne's return to pop prominence, after the singer left RCA Records and joined Epic in late 2011. The brilliantly bratty "Here's to Never Growing Up" jumped 60-30 on last week's Billboard Hot 100 (it's now No. 31), while Lavigne returned to the top 10 of the Social 50 chart for the first time in two years, with 15 million overall plays to her name. And those accomplishments occurred before Reid watched Lavigne tear through the lead single from her forthcoming fifth album.
"My relationship with her has been this way since the day I met her, and my guess is that it will always be this way," Reid says. "She's a superstar. I think she's motivated now, and I expect that she'll do really well."
Thanks partly to the "Today" stop, "Here's to Never Growing Up" notches its second-biggest sales frame this week with 79,000 downloads, up from 62,000, according to SoundScan. The single's cumulative sales stand at 329,000 downloads since its April 9 release, but the longevity of the song -- and perhaps of Lavigne's stateside comeback in general -- will depend on radio. "What the Hell," the lead single from Lavigne's 2011 album "Goodbye Lullaby," peaked at No. 27 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and No. 8 on Mainstream Top 40, failing to repeat the success of her last big hit, the Hot 100-topping "Girlfriend" in 2007. "Here's to Never Growing Up" moves up two spots on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, and shifts 67-66 on Hot 100 Airplay.
"It's just getting going," WHTZ (Z100) New York PD Sharon Dastur says of "Here's to Never Growing Up." Z100 has played the song 85 times through May 20, according to Nielsen BDS, and Dastur believes the guitar-laden track fits comfortably next to rock-tinged top 40 fare like Fall Out Boy, Imagine Dragons and Icona Pop. "It's still in a newer rotation because we want to make sure it's familiar," Dastur says, "but the early signs we're seeing look really strong, and we're seeing the same thing at some of our sister stations around the country."
As Epic hopes to turn a corner of sorts and deliver the first major hit of the Reid era, Lavigne has relentlessly promoted her new radio offering: She asked fans to submit photos and videos for the song's lyric video in March, released its official music video on May 9, performed the track on "Dancing With the Stars" on May 14 and did extensive radio promotion following her "Today" performance. Lavigne is also beguiling pop fans with a love story: She and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, who co-wrote "Here's to Never Growing Up," got engaged after sharing the studio for Lavigne's new album. "Our relationship started off by writing songs together," Lavigne says. Reid adds that Kroeger "has been one of the greatest songwriters of the last 10 years."
Also crucial for Lavigne is releasing an album with more hits than just its lead single -- after all, "Let Go" became the singer's top seller on the strength of such top 10 hits as "Complicated," "Sk8er Boi" and "I'm With You." However, manager Larry Rudolph is optimistic about her Epic debut. "The second single is equally as strong and has an equal amount of edge," he says. "We're going to hit two home runs in a row."
Lavigne's still-untitled new album is due in September, with touring details in support of the full-length still being discussed.

The Canadian star has recorded the track 'Bad Girl' for her upcoming new album, which is expected to be released later this year.
Speaking to MTV, Lavigne revealed that the shock-rocker came over to her house in the early hours of the morning to record the track. She said:
"It was last minute. I was sitting there at the board thinking Manson would be perfect on this track, so I texted him, and he's like, 'I'll come over and I'll hear it'. So he came at 4 o'clock in the morning...Yes, it was one of those nights."
Lavigne's new album should also feature lead single 'Here's To Never Growing Up', which was unveiled to the public earlier this year.

Avril Shares Engagement Details

Caption
Avril Lavigne got engaged to Chad Kroeger in August 2012 and the pop punk princess dished on the details of the romantic proposal during a visit to Access Hollywood Liveon Wednesday.

“He proposed in the studio — that’s where we met, in the studio where we made my record at,” Avril told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover, when asked where the Nickelback frontman popped the question.
The soon-to-be-married Canadian singers were friends at first, having met when Chad the now-couple got together to co-write a song for Avril’s new album. Soon after, sparks were flying!
“We were working together having a good time, bro-ing out, having a good time,” she said. “We started off as friends goofing around and then turned into something else.”
Chad – who proposed with a 14-carat ring – matches everything Avril was looking for in a man.
“I had said I want to date someone 10 years older than me and he’s exactly 10 years older,” the 28-year-old said. “He’s got it together, he’s mature, he’s done this thing, he’s lived life. He’s been around the world on tour, I’ve been around the world on tour.
“We can really relate over a lot of things and we really just bonded over music and songwriting,” she added.
The singer — whose new single, “Here’s To Never Growing Up,” is out now — said she and Chad are living together now, and working on wedding plans.
“I want to do something special and unique [for our wedding],” Avril said. “I’m planning now.”
Avril’s new album will be released in the fall.

Interview with Avril - part 3

In Part Three of our interview with Avril Lavigne, the Canadian star opens up about her biggest life lessons to date and her perfect wedding playlist.
The 28-year-old singer has worked in the music industry since she was just 15 years old, and learned the hard way how career pressures can damage relationships.
Avril - now engaged to marry Nickelback's Chad Kroeger - divorced her first husband, Sum 41's Deryck Whibley, in November 2010, after three years of marriage.
Read below as she discusses the importance of balance in maintaining healthy relationships and enjoying life. She also reveals the meaning of life! Oh, Avril...

What does an average day in the life of Avril look like, when you’re not doing interviews, performing and recording?
I like to exercise. Like, I like to swim. I like watching movies now, more than I ever have before, and I like red wine. My new thing is Champagne.
Very nice. So you’re not just a beer girl anymore?
No (laughs).
What else has changed in your late twenties? Have your priorities changed?
You know, you live, you learn. You grow up, you get a little wiser.
What have your biggest lessons have been?
To have balance, ‘cause when things are really intense - like this career choice, or anything it is in life, like your job or whatever – what I have just learned for me personally, is that I want to keep a balance, to always enjoy what it is that I do...
Break it up a little bit, versus having too much to do. If you eat your favourite food every single day, you get sick of it, you don’t like it anymore.
I think it’s important to… work really hard and then focus on family and friends... Because you know how it is when you go on tour, you don’t see your family or your friends, or you’re never home. So what tends to happen is relationships don’t work and things like that. You get my drift? (Laughs).
So that’s it, balance.
A lot of people in their 20s make five year plans. Have you made one?
No, I’m just living in the moment.
Let’s talk a little bit about the dream wedding playlist. What songs have to be on the list?
I think I’m going to leave that up to Chad to come up with the music.
I think we’re going to break it up... There’s the ceremony, there’s the reception and then there’s after the reception, which will be like a DJ.
I think during the reception I’m going to go for some classy jazz music.
And finally Avril, what do you think is the meaning of life?
What is the meaning of life? (Laughs). What’s the meaning of life (to room)?
I got a couple of opinions – happiness, love. That’s what we’re thinking over here.
Avril's new single, Here's To Never Growing Up, is out 2 June.

Interview with Avril - part 2

In Part Two of our exclusive interview with Avril Lavigne, we chat about collaborations on her fifth studio album with shock-rocker Marilyn Manson and fiancĂ© Chad Kroeger of Nickelback.
Avril also reveals a secret collab with a high-profile female pop star, and discusses why she tends to prefer working with men over women.

There are some pretty interesting collabs on the album that you’ve teased so far. Marilyn Manson – how did that come about?
I wrote a song called Bad Girl. It’s a heavier tune and I thought his voice would be perfect on it, so I hit him up. I called him and he came over to the studio and he really liked the track and he just put some vocals down on it.
He was a pro and he did an amazing job. I really appreciate him as an artist and I love his style and I really respect him and his art, and I thought it was really cool to have him on this record.
What was he like in person? And what was your relationship like?
We go way back. I met him when I was 18, went to his show and hung out backstage, and he’s just really smart and he’s very artistic, and he really likes music, and he’s a great performer, and he has his own style that I think is dope and…. he rocks!
He puts on a great concert live and he also is dabbling in directing, directing music videos and short films and stuff like that, so he’s a very creative man.
You've also got collaborations with Chad Kroeger on the album... can you tell us a bit more about those songs? There’s a duet.
Yes, I have a ballad with Chad which is kind of like a love ballad that we sing together. I have a song called Hello Kitty, which I wrote about Hello Kitty because I’m obsessed, and it’s a really fun thing that I’ve never done before. It kind of has a kind of glitchy, electronic feel to it and it’s... the only one on the record that sounds like that. It’s really different and a lot of my friends I’ve played it for really like it. I’m having a lot of fun with that one.
Do you have any idea what’s going to be the next single?
I think probably a song called Rock and Roll.
So tell us about it!
To me... it’s rock and roll, it’s a way of life – it’s a fashion, it’s a spirit and it’s also very similar to the first single. You know, the rock and roll spirit like, 'WOOOO!' and going all out.
And it’s LOUD, impressive and it stands for so many other things than just music – that’s really what it comes down to - and it’s a song that I’m just putting the final touches to now. I wish I could tell you more about it, but you’ll have to wait.
Are there any other collaborations on the album that you can tell us about?
Umm…that one, which is why I can’t say anything yet – we’re in the process of making that happen.
Can you give us a hint?
No, because it’s not confirmed! I’m trying to do something right now. Like, I’ve been in the studio for the past four days working and I can’t really say anything until it’s done.
But yeah, Chad, Manson, and this album compared to the last one is more up, more pop, but still has a bit of a rock edge to it, which I love.
The tone of the record...  a lot of it is like, nostalgic, and there’s a lot of summer songs. It’s not just a record about break-ups, make-ups and falling in love – there’s a lot more to it which I’m happy about.
Can we expect any female collaborations? Do you prefer working with men?
I hope so! That’s what I’m working on now!
Oooh.... Avril you tease!
Ooooooh...
What would be some dream female collaborations then?
We’ll see! Fingers crossed!
What do you think is different about working with men, versus working with women?
You are right, I tend to work more with men. I don’t know, I mean... I always hang out with my band, who are guys. My friends are always guys, I used to always hang out with guys in school growing up. I was kind of like one of the boys, played a lot of sports and yeah, I do write my songs with guy collaborators. I have done some with other women, but it typically ends up that way - I’m not really sure why.

Interview with Avril - part 1

Canada's pop-punk Queen Avril Lavigne is back! Not only is she releasing a new single and her fifth studio album later this year, she's also planning a wedding to new love Chad Kroeger .
The couple fell in love while working on her new album and co-wrote her punchy new single Here's To Never Growing Up, a fist-pumping summer anthem.

Let’s talk about the single, Here's To Never Growing Up. So we’ve seen photos from the video - little teasers - but can you tell us about the concept? What’s happening?
It’s prom, and basically I have my live performance with my band and we’re in prom outfits. And then we’re kind of like in a high school, or it could be a college...
When I was writing it, I was thinking about being younger – I’m still in my 20s, but you know, like high school - and with my 20s being in music and everything, I love the concept of ‘simply prom’ for the video.
Growing up in the music biz, do you feel like you missed out at all on being young and enjoying life?
No, although I actually didn’t go to prom, so this was my first prom! No, I don’t feel like I missed out, because I had a very normal childhood. I grew up in a small town and I left when I was 16.
In the song you sing about having a great night with your friends, partying and enjoying life. When was the last time you had an evening like that - when you just hit the town, danced on tables?
My experience in the studio over the past year was kind of like that. We would be sitting around writing songs. Sometimes we’d stay until four in the morning just living in the moment...
For me it was like being in the studio, having fun, writing music, ordering food (laughs), having a couple of drinks, but…that was that for me.

Do you feel like you’re growing up? Like, ‘Oh man – I’ve been doing this for a long time!’?
Yeah I do, but at the same time, I still feel like the same person. I love having fun and I’m young at heart, so that’s how my friends and I roll. We love to enjoy life and live in the moment. When we are having a special moment - whatever that is, like partying, or whether it’s being up on stage - it’s all about making the best of it and losing yourself in that moment, being care-free and just living it up.

Do you feel it’s difficult to lose yourself in the moment when the whole world is watching?
(Laughs) No, I just got a tattoo on my arm that says 'live in the moment’ en Français - so in French...
Everything I go through is at a very fast rate, and it’s quick, and sometimes I do stuff and I look back and I’m like, ‘Woah it flew by!’.
So I always try to be like, ‘Okay I’m eating a really good meal, so I’m  going to enjoy it while I’m eating it'.
Or I’m in a really cool city today, so even now I’m trying to actually do things to enjoy it.

Does scrapbooking and taking Polaroids help you live in the moment, and help you capture this amazing life you’re living?
Being in the studio is so much fun, I decided to get a camera… polaroid cameras are awesome because you can take a picture and see it right away. And on my downtime - while someone will be doing like drums or something, or an instrument that I wasn’t playing - I would work with my scrapbook.
And now when I look back through it, I’m really glad that I made it because I get to remember the whole process of making this record and all the people I worked with.

And does that feel like that’s something that’s just for you, as opposed to Instagram photos which are for everyone?
Yeah I guess so (laughs). It’s more old school. I remember being a kid and taking pictures and having to get my film developed, and waiting like a whole week to get it back, and it’s more old school. It’s exciting to actually have that physical image. And I like scrapbooking!

A lot of things have changed since you first started out... What’s most different for you this time around?
Well, everything from now - it’s all about iTunes and downloads, and singles versus albums, and there’s so many artists out there. Radio is at a completely different stage and you know just as much as I do really how much everything’s changed.
I’m happy that I can still make a full CD. I’m still doing that and I love the fact that I put can put out a CD with 12, 13 songs and I can still have my album art and kind of throw that stuff together. It’s not completely gone.

So you love scrapbooking and old-school stuff. Do you think we’ll ever see Avril moving to the country and listening to opera and raising sheep?
I don’t know where that came from (laughs), but I like jazz music! I like Frank Sinatra, I like painting, cooking and I love writing songs!

Avril Lavigne can be the queen of our punk-princess prom any day.
The video for the her new single "Here's to Never Growing Up" debuted last week—and not only did we have the platinum-selling hitmaker in studio today, E! News has exclusively obtained behind-the-scenes footage from the video shoot.
And it isn't all teddy bears and smoky eyes...
Well, actually there is a fair amount of smoky-eye action.
But you can also check out the engaged 28-year-old having an amazing time on the production's high school set, rocking out next to the lockers and dodging a horde of kids who just can't wait to get the bleep out of there.
Or at least can't wait to get to the prom!
Also watch Avril shoot the video's central prom scene, which culminates in a burst of confetti and champagne to mark the end of childhood and the beginning of, if she has it her way, not-quite-adulthood.
"I'm pretty impressed with the set, it looks pretty cool," she said behind the scenes, admitting that she scrapped her own concept at last minute when the director came up with the awesome-sounding (and -looking) prom scenario.
Definitely a good choice.
Watch Avril in studio tonight on E! News at 7 p.m. & 11:30 p.m.
